White House rejects top Hegseth pick who criticized Trump, Vance

The internal battles at the Pentagon are heating up again as a key appointing is facing high-level obstruction.

The contention over Ricky Buria's past stance against former President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance has derailed his confirmation as chief of staff in Pete Hegseth's Defense Department hierarchy, as the New York Post reports.

Buria, currently the acting chief of staff to Hegseth, is a holdover from the Biden administration.

At 43, Buria has not shied away from vocalizing his disagreement with certain administrative policies, particularly those of Trump and Vance. His outspoken nature and oppositional stance have sparked significant controversy within the administration.

Buria criticized Vance’s policies, labeling them as "wackamamie crazy" and isolationist, and he has openly disapproved of Trump's directive to use military resources for immigration enforcement, referring to it as "dumb." These strong opinions have contributed to the White House's decision to block his permanent appointment, questioning his ideological fit within the current administration’s agenda.

Controversial pick

Despite these challenges, Buria is highly regarded for his intelligence and effectiveness as an administrator.

His competence has not gone unnoticed, earning him not only the respect of his peers but also significant influence within the Pentagon. Yet, his critical views on Trump's policies, like the repatriation of migrants using military aircraft, have only fueled the debate over his suitability for the role.

Hegseth, a prominent figure in the administration, has been a supporter of Buria, pushing for him to be elevated to the top advisory position.

However, this request was recently rejected by the White House, highlighting the deep ideological divisions affecting personnel decisions at this level of government.

Buria's influence extended to internal affairs within the Pentagon as well. He encouraged Hegseth to dismiss three top aides who were seen as non-interventionists and competition for Buria. This move was part of a broader strategy by Buria to consolidate power and align the department more closely with his and Hegseth’s interventionist views.

Security concerns, political ambitions raise eyebrows

Another aspect of concern regarding Buria has been his handling of sensitive situations, including operational security lapses.

Notably, Buria managed Hegseth's cellphone, bringing it into restricted areas, which violated security protocols. Such actions have raised eyebrows and added to the scrutiny surrounding him.

Furthermore, Buria harbors political ambitions beyond his current role, expressing desires to eventually run for governor of Florida as a Democrat. This ambition speaks to his broader political aspirations and may also play into the tension regarding his current role within a predominantly Republican administration.

Described by some as wielding a Rasputin-like influence, Buria's ability to maintain his position and influence, despite the controversy, has drawn varied reactions.

His survival strategy includes managing the challenges posed by ideological differences while ensuring his perspectives influence Pentagon operations.

The road ahead: Complications and contention

Buria's handling of role has not been without its critics, with some calling his advice and the resulting decisions by Hegseth "the worst in a string of bad judgment calls." Such criticism underscores the fraught nature of Buria's tenure and the complex interpersonal dynamics at play within the administration.

Regarding the vetting of political appointees, one source noted, "All political appointees go through a vetting process, and anyone with Ricky’s past would not make it through step one." This statement encapsulates the challenges Buria faces, as his past criticisms and ideological stance clash with the administration's direction.

As the story develops, it remains to be seen how Buria will navigate these turbulent waters. His ability to influence Pentagon policies while under fire adds another layer of complexity to an already charged atmosphere. Whether he can overcome the ideological and operational hurdles to secure his place in Hegseth’s team -- or if he will have to seek influence from other avenues—continues to be a central question in this unfolding saga.
