Wikipedia co-founder revisits Christianity after philosophical quests

Larry Sanger, known for co-founding Wikipedia, has reembraced Christianity after decades of skepticism and philosophical inquiry. Raised in the conservative Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, Sanger began to doubt Christian theology as a teenager. This doubt led him to distance himself from the faith by the age of 15.

Following his academic career in philosophy, Sanger felt disenchanted with the discipline and eventually left academia in the mid-1990s. His departure marked the beginning of a profound personal and intellectual journey toward reevaluating the existence of God. Initially, he positioned himself as an agnostic during his graduate studies, neither fully accepting nor denying the possibility of God's existence.

Through years of study and reflection, Larry Sanger's journey from a skeptic to a believer unfolded, culminating in his quiet, yet profound acceptance of Christianity in 2020, The Christian Post reported.

Deepening Philosophical Engagements

Intrigued by Christian apologetics and the philosophical argument for a "First Cause," Sanger began to seriously engage with these theological concepts. Although these arguments pointed toward the existence of a divine creator, Sanger recognized their limitations in proving the Biblical God specifically.

His journey took a significant turn in 2005 as he reacted against what he perceived as anti-Christian sentiment prevalent in the US. This shifted his focus towards a deeper investigation of Christian scriptures and theology. Sanger started studying the Bible more intensively, making use of digital tools like the YouVersion Bible app to systematically explore its contents.

His philosophical inquiries and substantial engagement with scripture gradually led him to a more serious contemplation of his spiritual beliefs. Despite his vast intellectual pursuits, Sanger described his eventual conversion in February 2020 as an "anti-climactic" experience, marked by a quiet acknowledgment of his belief in God.

The Role of Family and Intellectual Peers

Sanger often reflected on the intelligence and respect he held for his Christian family and friends. This respect played a crucial role in his reconsideration of the Christian faith. "I had too much respect for Christian family and friends," Sanger remarked, acknowledging the influence of their intellectual and moral qualities on his journey.

"And some of them were extremely intelligent… Perhaps, I had not given Christianity a fair shake," he added, noting the impact of witnessing faith practiced by intellectually compelling individuals. These interactions slowly dismantled his reservations and opened him to the nuances of Christian thought and practice.

Sanger's journey was not solely an intellectual pursuit but also an interpersonal exploration, reflecting on the lives and beliefs of those around him. This blend of intellectual rigor and personal encounters guided him toward a deeper understanding and acceptance of his faith.

Critical View on Wikipedia's Neutrality

Following his conversion, Sanger has expressed significant criticism towards Wikipedia, the very platform he helped create, concerning its approach to neutrality, especially in articles related to Jesus and Christianity. He highlighted how the platform's voice seemingly undercuts the historical reliability of the Gospels, stating, "It simply asserts, again in its voice, that ‘the quest for the historical Jesus has yielded major uncertainty on the historical reliability of the Gospels and on how closely the Jesus portrayed in the Bible reflects the historical Jesus.’"

This criticism underscores Sanger's evolving view on the importance of perspective and bias in information dissemination, particularly about religious content. His concerns reflect a broader critique of how major platforms handle subjects that are vital to cultural and religious communities.

Though he has embraced Christianity, Sanger has not yet committed to a specific church, citing the pandemic and personal considerations as factors delaying this decision. However, he has voiced a commitment to defend the Christian faith actively, marking a new chapter in his life as both a public intellectual and a believer.
