House Speaker Steps In To Ensure Trump Attends Arlington Memorial

Speaker Mike Johnson intervened to facilitate former President Donald Trump's visit to Arlington National Cemetery for the third anniversary of the Afghanistan withdrawal, following difficulties encountered by Gold Star families in arranging the event.

According to a report by The Daily Caller, the families who lost their children during the Biden administration's withdrawal from Afghanistan had invited Trump to participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the cemetery.

The Gold Star families reported that Arlington National Cemetery officials were making it challenging for the former President to appear at the ceremony honoring their children.

They claimed that the cemetery imposed specific time constraints that didn't accommodate everyone's schedules and initially denied Trump access to their children's gravesites.

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman's Intervention

Rep. Michael McCaul, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, was contacted by Gold Star parents Darin Hoover and Kelly Barnett, whose son SSGT Taylor Hoover was among those killed. They informed McCaul about the difficulties they were facing in coordinating the ceremony with Trump.

McCaul promptly reached out to Speaker Johnson for assistance and continued to monitor the situation until it was resolved. He expressed his frustration with the obstacles faced by the families in their attempt to commemorate their loved ones.

McCaul stated:

When Darin and Kelly contacted me, I was furious to hear their request to have President Trump join them to commemorate the anniversary of Taylor's death was being stymied, along with several of the other family members of U.S. servicemembers killed at Abbey Gate. I immediately asked what I could do to help and reached out to Speaker Johnson to see what he could do. Thankfully, Speaker Johnson and his team acted quickly and were able to get the situation resolved. But something like this should never have happened. Gold Star families have already suffered enough.

Republican Representatives' Efforts to Assist

Republican California Rep. Darrell Issa, who has previously called on President Biden to meet with these Gold Star families, was present at the ceremonies on Monday. His office had been in contact with Arlington National Cemetery leading up to the anniversary.

Issa said, "This administration absolutely interfered with the tributes to the 13 fallen. In its war on Trump, it made the Gold Star families collateral damage."

Two sources close to the discussions revealed that their office worked with Arlington National Cemetery to adjust the event time to accommodate Trump's attendance, as requested by the families who were not receiving assistance from the cemetery.

Speaker Johnson's Crucial Intervention

A source familiar with the discussions between Gold Star families and Arlington National Cemetery revealed significant changes occurred after Speaker Johnson intervened.

The source explained that the involvement of Speaker Johnson, along with Representatives Issa, Mast, and Chairman Mike McCaul, was crucial in supporting the Gold Star families.

The source emphasized that the dynamics shifted markedly following the Speaker’s intervention. Remarkably, it wasn’t until three days before the ceremonies that Arlington National Cemetery finalized and confirmed the critical details of the event with the families.

Gold Star Family's Perspective

Darin Hoover, in an emotional phone call with The Daily Caller, emphasized that he and other Gold Star family members had personally invited Trump to attend. He also criticized the Biden administration for not contacting them in the past three years.

Hoover expressed:

We, WE extended the invitation to President Trump. We are the ones that asked him to come. We are the ones that asked him to assist in laying a wreath for our son, and for the shooting for, Sergeant Canals and for Cole. We're the ones that asked that. President Trump didn't come to us. His team didn't come to us and say, hey, this would be good for business. Business? No. President Trump has stood by us from day one. He has been compassionate. He has been loving. He's been understanding. He's taking the mantle of our outrage a little bit. Because to be quite honest with you, being very frank, we haven't heard diddly squat from the current administration in three years.

The White House, when contacted about the difficulties faced by these families, referred The Daily Caller to Arlington National Cemetery, stating that it was a matter between the cemetery and the Trump campaign, not a White House matter.

Arlington National Cemetery did not immediately respond to requests for comment on these claims.

Conclusion

The Gold Star families' desire to have former President Trump participate in a ceremony honoring their fallen children at Arlington National Cemetery faced unexpected challenges. Speaker Mike Johnson's intervention was crucial in resolving the issues and allowing the event to proceed. The lack of response from the Biden administration and Arlington National Cemetery left many questions unanswered regarding the initial obstacles faced by the families in organizing this significant memorial event.
