In a significant display of faith and community outreach, nearly 200 volunteers from the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board (MBCB) engaged with thousands at the Mississippi State Fair this October, leading to 373 new commitments to Christianity.

According to the Christian Post, this year’s fair in Jackson marked a record-breaking opportunity for outreach with 2,824 gospel conversations taking place.

The fair, which has become a yearly mission field for the MBCB since 2021, gathers Baptist volunteers who initiate conversations about faith with attendees. This year, their efforts were remarkably fruitful, culminating in hundreds deciding to follow Christ.

Linda Burris, an MBCB spokesperson, shared the enthusiasm witnessed at the event, noting, "We had 195 volunteers to participate in the State Fair Ministry. We made a record of 2,824 Gospel conversations with 373 of those praying to receive Christ."

An Array of Spiritual Conversations Unfold at Local Fair

The tactic used involves volunteers engaging fairgoers in discussions about spirituality and offering prayers. Those who show interest in embracing the Christian faith are then helped with prayer and immediate follow-up resources provided by the MBCB.

Following their initial engagement, new believers are given a gospel tract, a letter, and a discipleship booklet to aid them in their new faith journey. This material is aimed at grounding them in their spiritual path and connecting them to local church communities.

Burris elaborated on the follow-up strategy, saying, "Our volunteers are assigned a number that they put on the cards of those they share with. A copy of the cards of the ones who received Christ is mailed back to the volunteer who shared with them. They are then able to make contact with them." She also mentioned, "We sort the cards according to city and town and mail the information to a local pastor so that they can be contacted by a church in their area."

"It was exciting and scary at the same time,” Burris expressed, highlighting the emotional rollercoaster volunteers often feel. Despite these challenges, the outcome is positive as volunteers learn "they can do it and it's not that hard."

Burris remarked on the broader impact of the fair, saying, "It is rewarding to hear the stories of other believers at the fair and to share with someone hungry to hear the good news of hope."
