Gateway church founder faces indictment for child sexual abuse, Oklahoma AG announces

An Oklahoma grand jury has indicted Robert Morris, founder of Gateway Church, on multiple charges of child sexual abuse.

According to the Christian Post, the indictment relates to incidents from the early 1980s involving a then-12-year-old girl, marking a significant legal move against a high-profile religious leader.

On Wednesday, a grand jury in Oklahoma unveiled a five-count indictment against Robert Morris for lewd or indecent acts with a child. These charges stem from allegations of sexual abuse that began in December 1982 involving Cindy Clemishire, who was just 12 at the time. The abuse reportedly lasted for about four years.

Timeline of Alleged Abuse and Public Accusations

Morris, who was working as a traveling evangelist, first met the Clemishire family in Hominy, Oklahoma. According to Cindy Clemishire, he began abusing her around Christmas 1982 in that familial setting. She later reported enduring prolonged and severe abuse, which she only brought to public attention years after the incidents.

In June 2024, after these allegations became public, Morris resigned from his leadership role at Gateway Church. He previously admitted to "inappropriate sexual behavior" with a young individual more than 35 years earlier, describing it as kissing and petting but insisting it did not involve intercourse. He confessed only after the initial exposure of his actions in 1987, which led him to step back from ministry and undergo counseling.

Now 54, Clemishire challenges Morris’s description, emphasizing the stark contrast between his account and her reality as a child. She has detailed the profound impact and violation she experienced, asserting that the abuse involved non-consensual physical acts far beyond what Morris admitted.

Gateway Church Responds to Allegations

Gateway Church, confronted with the gravity of the allegations, conducted an independent investigation which led to the removal of several elders knowledgeable of the circumstances before Clemishire’s public declaration. The church issued a statement expressing gratitude towards the justice system for its efforts to hold abusers accountable, underscoring continued support for Clemishire and all affected parties.

Tra Willbanks from Gateway Church disclosed that some church elders and employees were aware of the true age of Clemishire during the time of the abuse, acknowledging a failure within the church's leadership to address these facts earlier. This revelation has added a layer of institutional accountability to the scandal.

The case is notable for bypassing statute of limitations concerns, with Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond clarifying that such limitations do not apply as Morris was not an Oklahoma resident. This legal perspective prepares the way for prosecutorial actions unimpeded by time constraints.

Reaction from Legal Authorities and the Affected

The Office of the Oklahoma Attorney General, led by Gentner Drummond, has taken a stern stance on the case. A formal statement from the office decried the abuse, especially highlighting the misuse of Morris’s pastoral position to exploit a vulnerable child. They echoed a sentiment of overdue justice for Clemishire, who had endured decades waiting for legal acknowledgment and action.

Clemishire herself remains a focal figure in this unfolding narrative. Her statement captures the relief and somber reflection of someone who has waited over four decades for these legal proceedings. She expressed gratitude towards the authorities for their diligent efforts and remained hopeful for a just resolution that would hold Morris accountable for his actions.

The community and members of Gateway Church, as well as broader onlookers, now watch closely as this case progresses through the legal system, marking a significant moment in addressing allegations of abuse within religious communities. As the church and its congregants grapple with these revelations, the impact of Morris’s indictment is likely to resonate beyond the courtroom, challenging norms and prompting a reevaluation of trust and accountability in religious institutions.
