Community rallies support after a brutal attack on pastor’s wife leaves her in a coma
An 85-year-old woman, Lucy Pat Curl, is currently battling for her life after a severe attack inside her home led to critical brain injuries. The incident has deeply affected her family and the local community in Catalin.
According to the Christian Post, Lucy Pat Curl suffered extensive brain damage after being attacked at her home, now reliant on life support as the community prays for her recovery.
On January 31, 2025, Ronald D. Davis, 55, forcibly entered Lucy's home, claiming he was a community service officer. When Lucy requested identification, Davis attacked her, causing severe injuries.
An Attack at Home Leads to a Call for Help
Following the assault, Lucy managed to get to her vehicle and sound the horn to alert others. It was her husband, Bill Curl, who found her gravely injured and promptly called for emergency services.
Bill Curl, who was working at the First Baptist Church Orlando's Center for Pregnancy at the time, has remained steadfast by his wife's side at Orlando Regional Medical Center. The medical team there has determined that the damage to Lucy’s brain is too extensive for surgery, providing a grim prognosis.
Community and Church Gather in Support
Ronald D. Davis, the attacker, had been an ex-convict released from prison just months before the attack. Police found him sleeping in a shed a few miles from the Curl's home. Authorities arrested Davis, and they have charged him with several severe offenses, including home invasion robbery and aggravated battery.
The First Baptist Church Orlando, where Lucy and her husband have served as long-time staff members, has rallied behind the Curl family. Senior Pastor David Uth shared how the church community is coping and supporting them during this tragic time.
Pastor Uth Shares Heartfelt Reflections
“Rachel and I stood there with her yesterday, along with Bill, and the sight of her body... What he [the attacker] did to her, and you just look up and go, ‘God, she's one of your finest,'" recounted Pastor Uth, overwhelmed by the brutality of the assault.
“She’s one of the best. Both Bill and Lucy Pat. That family has come together, and they're navigating this, and she's being completely supported by life support right now with a ventilator. And [that’s] all that they do to keep her [alive]. So, they've got to make the decision: What are we going to do?” he continued.
The Curl's Wide Influence Through Decades
Bill and Lucy have dedicated 52 years to serving the First Baptist Church in Orlando and spent 18 years as missionaries in Europe, making significant impacts on many lives. David Uth highlighted Lucy’s active involvement in the church, playing piano at numerous ceremonies and being an integral part of the community’s spiritual life.
“He’s the one that'll be there for you in a heartbeat. And his wife, Lucy Pat, is right there with him. She plays the piano incredibly well. She plays at so many funerals for us and weddings and whatever the need may be,” Uth praised the couple's contributions.
Faith and Hope for a Miracle
Despite the dire medical outlook, the church and its members are holding onto faith. “Now, when I say that, Bill told me he asked one of the doctors, ‘Do you know my God? He can do anything,’” mentioned Pastor Uth, reflecting the strong faith guiding the Curl family and their supporters.
“That's right. He's a miracle worker and we're going to pray for [a] miracle. Do you believe in miracles?” Uth encouraged his congregation, fostering a community spirit centered around hope and prayer for Lucy’s recovery.
“He [Bill] said the doctor just kind of nodded and changed the subject. But we're praying today that God will give her a miracle,” Uth concluded, emphasizing the collective prayer for a dramatic recovery against the odds.
