DHS Alert on Walz Fuels CCP Influence Concerns

An investigation has been launched by the House Oversight Committee into potential ties between Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

According to Fox News, concerns have heightened regarding possible influence efforts by the CCP targeting U.S. politicians, with specific scrutiny on Walz’s interactions and historical background related to China.

James Comer, the House Oversight Committee Chairman, is spearheading the inquiry into Governor Walz's alleged connections with the CCP. This investigation began in August, but recent developments have brought additional focus to the case.

The involvement of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in monitoring the situation has only added to the intrigue.

House Committee's Probe Into Walz's China Ties

Following a revelation from a whistleblower, Comer subpoenaed DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for documentation of Walz’s ties.

However, DHS has not complied with these requests, according to Comer's public statements. This lack of responsiveness has raised further questions about the handling of intelligence concerning foreign influence on local politicians.

Comer has made parts of DHS’s internal communications available to the public to underline the scale of potential influence operations.

One of the communications Comer highlighted includes a Microsoft Teams discussion among DHS officials, which specifically mentioned Walz in the context of CCP efforts to target U.S. politicians.

The Committee is releasing the above message as an example of communications within DHS’s possession in which DHS officials express concern about the CCP targeting politicians and their influence operations at the state and local levels — and specifically, concerns about the CCP’s influence operations as they related to Governor Walz, Comer wrote in a letter to Mayorkas Tuesday.

Subpoena Requests Remain Unanswered by DHS

Comer's letter to Mayorkas points to "elite capture operations" by the CCP aimed at influencing state and local officials like Governor Walz, emphasizing concerns over Walz's extensive travel to China and interactions there.

Reports suggest that Walz facilitated student trips to China in the 1990s through his company, Educational Travel Adventures, Inc., which dissolved in 2007.

The document claims that Walz coordinated trips for students to China, funded by the Chinese government, and personally made approximately 30 trips to the nation. These activities have prompted Comer to extend his subpoena requests to further investigate the intelligence files.

Interference concerns were heightened in March 2024 when Walz met with the Chinese Consul General, sparking discussions on China-U.S. relations and partnerships. This meeting has been scrutinized as part of the ongoing analysis of Walz's interactions with Chinese officials.

Investigation Examines Walz's Historical Connections

Additional reports have drawn attention to Walz’s past involvement with the U.S.-China Peoples Friendship Association's national convention in Minnesota in 2019. This event is cited as part of a pattern of connections requiring examination under current scrutiny.

Comer's communications suggest a focus on patterns of questionable interactions linked to Walz’s historical and professional engagements in China. With these contexts, Walz's nomination as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate raised further alarms within DHS, as alleged in internal communications.

Chairman Comer continues to oversee this investigation, citing Walz's inability to shed sufficient light on some key questions about his historical dealings with China. Comer has expressed frustration over DHS's lack of cooperation, signaling a potential escalation if further documents are not provided.

DHS has been wholly unresponsive, and the Committee is considering all available options, Comer wrote concerning the agency's lack of cooperation.

The unfolding investigation led by James Comer seeks to address potential foreign influence targeting U.S. government figures, with Governor Tim Walz at the forefront of this current inquiry. Despite a subpoena for records from DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, responses remain lacking. Walz's historic engagement initiatives with Chinese entities raise further scrutiny amidst ongoing investigations.
