Major layoffs shake ABC News, Disney operations

In a significant cost-cutting move, ABC News and several other Disney divisions laid off approximately 200 staffers on a recent Wednesday morning.

This restructuring, including major changes to GMA3, mirrors prevailing digital transformation efforts within the wider media industry, as the Daily Mail reports.

Impact on GMA3 and ABC News

The layoffs are said to have had a profound impact on GMA3, one of ABC’s daytime shows, which sources described as having been "entirely gutted."

Even so, co-hosts Eva Pilgrim and DeMarco Morgan remain unaffected by these changes. This sweeping action took place amid broader efforts by media companies to streamline operations and reduce expenses.

Almin Karamehmedovic, the president of ABC News, oversaw these layoffs, part of ongoing restructuring under his leadership since his appointment in August.

His tenure follows his successful role at World News Tonight. Karamehmedovic recognized the difficulty of these decisions, stating, "It will 'undoubtedly be difficult for our organization.'"

Amid the layoffs, emotions ran high in the ABC offices located in Manhattan. Journalist Oliver Darcy reported, "Tears flowed through ABC's Manhattan offices as panicked staffers made frantic phone calls figuring out who was next on the chopping block."

Staffers, losing their job security, exchanged worried calls trying to understand the fallout, with one employee summarizing the situation as about "doing more with less."

Changes and Consolidations at ABC

Further integrations and consolidations were announced alongside the layoffs. ABC News Studios, 20/20, Nightline, and Impact x Nightline will now operate under a unified leadership. This restructuring aims to consolidate storytelling capabilities and enhance the network’s efficiency.

Additionally, ABC News is set to deepen the integration between its digital, social operations, and traditional news gathering units. These integrations reflect an ongoing shift towards a more digital-focused news environment, emphasizing efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

The affected employees, primarily based in ABC’s new downtown New York location following a move from the Upper West Side, were offered a severance package.

This includes 60 days of normal pay plus an additional week of pay for each year of service. This severance adjustment from two weeks of pay per year served in previous layoffs led to some dissatisfaction among staff.

Broader Industry Trends Refleted

The layoffs at ABC News are not isolated incidents but are part of a broader contraction within the television news industry. Similar workforce reductions have been observed at other major networks like CNN and NBC News, illustrating a trend towards downsizing driven by economic pressures and shifts in viewer habits.

Additionally, GMA3 has faced several changes over its runtime, including multiple shifts in hosts and formats. The program also dealt with a high-profile scandal involving former co-hosts TJ Holmes and Amy Robach, whose public affair resulted in their departure from the show in 2022.

In a media landscape increasingly dominated by digital platforms and changing consumer expectations, these layoffs represent a significant shift in strategy for traditional broadcasters such as ABC News.

The network aims to adapt to this new reality, even as it means parting ways with a significant number of employees. The media industry, known for its constant evolution, faces yet another phase of rapid transformation, demanding adaptability from both businesses and individuals alike.

Looking Forward in Changing Industry

As the dust settles following the layoffs, ABC News, along with the rest of the Disney divisions affected, will likely continue to navigate through this transitional period.

With an eye on future developments, the challenge remains to balance operational efficiency with maintaining quality news delivery amidst evolving digital landscapes.
