Trump celebrates dramatic crime drop in Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C., once plagued by rampant violence, has just recorded a historic low with only one homicide in January 2026.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, this marks a stark decline from the 10 homicides reported in January 2025, a period described as a generational crime spike. The single homicide occurred on January 21, 2026, with the victim, 18-year-old Malik Delonte Moore, passing away the following day, as reported by The Washington Post.

The White House credits this downturn to a federal law enforcement surge, noting over 9,300 arrests since the operation began, with more than 1,000 in the first month alone. Now, as the nation’s capital breathes easier, supporters of the administration point to decisive action as the turning point. The dramatic shift in safety is undeniable, especially when considering that D.C. hadn’t started a year without a homicide in the first 10 days in over three decades.

Trump’s Bold Moves Transform the Capital

Back in August 2025, when President Trump declared a crime emergency, the District was reeling from staggering violent crime rates, outpacing all 50 states, the Daily Wire reported. He warned that D.C. ranked among the most dangerous cities globally by some measures, a shameful stain on our nation’s capital.

The response was swift and muscular, with a surge in federal enforcement that U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro called transformative. “The results are actually palpable,” she told a local outlet in late January. “You can feel it, and you can see it on the street right now.”

Indeed, the streets tell the story—robberies, carjackings, and burglaries have plummeted below pre-pandemic levels. Only assaults with dangerous weapons, including nonfatal shootings, have ticked upward, but the overall trend is a victory for law and order.

White House Claims Victory Over Crime

The White House isn’t shy about taking credit, and why should they be? Spokeswoman Taylor Rogers declared, “President Trump promised to make Washington, D.C. safe and beautiful again—now it is one of the safest cities in the country.” That’s a promise kept, plain and simple.

President Trump himself, speaking from the Oval Office on Monday, highlighted the turnaround with pride. He’s even quipped about the city being so secure that folks can stroll at night without fear, tossing in a lighthearted jab about someone’s wife walking alone. It’s a far cry from the fear that once gripped D.C.

Yet, not everyone wants to give credit where it’s due. The Washington Post hems and haws about “complex reasons” for the drop, conveniently sidestepping the National Guard deployment and federal muscle that turned the tide.

Critics Dodge the Obvious Success

This reluctance to acknowledge the administration’s role reeks of the usual media bias, always hunting for excuses to downplay conservative wins. If D.C. can go from a crime-ridden mess to a model of safety, shouldn’t that be the headline, not some vague theorizing?

Meanwhile, Team Trump isn’t holding back on calling out other cities drowning in lawlessness. They’ve pointed to places like Chicago, mired in violence, as examples of blue-run disasters that reject federal help out of sheer stubbornness.

Police stats back up the transformation—most crime categories are down, and nationally, the Council on Criminal Justice reports a historic low in murder rates across 40 cities. Eleven of 13 crime types dropped from 2024 to 2025, with nine falling by double digits, including homicides.

Lessons for a Safer America

What’s happening in D.C. isn’t just a local story; it’s a blueprint for the nation. When leadership prioritizes safety over pandering, results follow—over 9,300 arrests prove that criminals aren’t untouchable when the will to act exists.

Other cities should take note before their streets become no-go zones. If D.C., once a national embarrassment with sky-high robbery and murder rates, can turn around, there’s no excuse for others to wallow in failure.

The fight isn’t over, with a second homicide reported early on February 2, bringing the 2026 total to two. But under this administration, there’s confidence that law and order will prevail, restoring pride to our capital and beyond.
